Obituary for Harold "HD" McKinney

Harold “HD” McKinney
1942-2022
Harold "HD" McKinney, 79, resident of Cape Coral, Florida, formerly of Ashland, Ky., made his final journey home on Wednesday morning, February 9, 2022.

He was born June 10, 1942, in Grayson, Ky., a son of the late Fred and Magdelene McKinney.

Harold was employed as a machinist at Armco for 25 years and was founder, owner, and president of McKinney Tire Warehouse in Russell, Kentucky for 50 years.

Harold was a member of both the Ashland Business Club and Kiwanis Club. He tirelessly devoted himself to the community that he loved, and especially had a soft spot for children in need. Every summer, he loved to help organize the Run by the River event, which would provide shoes and backpacks to children for the upcoming school year. He was an avid supporter of Shriners Hospitals for Children, where his granddaughter received orthopedic care for many years. When he wasn't involved in community service, you could find him cooking or cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats. He loved to make others laugh. One could never have a conversation with HD without instantly feeling lighter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Paula Layne and Mary McKinney; two brothers, Oral and Lewis McKinney; and one sister, Opal "Hootie" McKinney.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara McKinney; three grandchildren, Ashley Layne and Taylor Layne of Ashland KY; Phillip Layne of Las Vegas NV; older brother, Earl Fredrick McKinney of Lexington, KY; and five special friends: Sam and Jane Triplett, Bob and Doretha Moore and David Layne. He also leaves behind a host of other family members and friends who will sadly mourn his passing.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements will be made in the directon of Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Ky.
