Obituary for Cora Lee Green Lewis (Crabtree)

Cora Green Lewis, 82, of Grayson, KY passed away Friday, July 15, 2022 at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, KY. She was born to Carl and Erna (White) Crabtree of Holly Creek in Rowan County on February 28, 1940 – although family lore says she was actually born after midnight on February 29, but her mother thought that date would “look odd” on a birth certificate.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Paul Green Jr., her sisters Virginia Richards and Sue Glover and Sue’s husband Chuck, nephew, Stephen Glover. Late in life she married Richard Lewis of Russell, who passed in 2008.

She is survived by her children, J.P. (Angie) Green of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Carla (Greg) Washnock of Lexington; by her beloved grandchildren Abby Washnock, Zach Washnock, Johnny Green, and Cara Green; by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Sharon and Roger Haines of Russell; nieces, Melinda Brizendine, Michelle Sloas, and Sarah Armstrong-McDonald; nephews, Mark Glover, Mike Riggs, and Patrick Riggs.

A 1958 graduate of Morehead High School and a 1966 graduate of Morehead State University, Cora taught in Carter County Schools for 31 years. She remained active to the end with First Church of Christ in Grayson, Carter County Retired Teachers, the Carter County Homemakers, and reunions of her high school classmates.

Cora loved to spend time with her kids and grandkids, to dine and talk with friends, to read everything she could get her hands on, and to travel as much as she could, visiting places from Hawaii to Ireland.

Her simple lessons for life: pray every day; look for the good in people; examine your motives; change is life’s most constant; and accept peoples’ differences.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, Ben James, minister. Burial will follow at the East Carter County Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christian Student Fellowship, 507 Columbia Avenue, Lexington, KY 40508 or to the Faith Promise Mission Fund, c/o First Church of Christ, 287 Pomeroy St. Grayson, KY 41143.
